My son is four-years-old.  One of his “chores” is feeding the beagle, once in the morning and once in the evening.  Int he fall and winter, the evening feeding happens after nightfall.  His chore requires him to venture out to the back patio, maybe 15 feet from the back door, open the food container, scoop out a serving, and place it in the dogs dish.  It takes all of 20 seconds.

Last winter, when it started to get very dark very early, my son expressed some hesitation in feeding the dog.  Since he loves this chore, I thought his reaction odd.  Once he ventured outside, I heard him call to me in a slightly alarmed voice.  I went outside, he turned to me, and with a crack in his voice asked me “Daddy, can you ‘elp me.  It’s weely dawk and kinda scawy out ‘ere…”
